I have an Olympus C-5000ZOOM digital camera. Actually I bought it for my wife about 4 years ago. I've tried to use it to photo coins and just can't figure it out. I've looked at the users manual and it might as well be written in Chineese. It's 5.0 megapixel and 3X optical zoom. My idea is to go to a camera shop and ask the guy or gal there to show me how to use it and set it up to photograph coins and then I'd buy one of those small tripods from them. What do you think, does anyone have any experience with this camera or opinions on how well it would work for taking coin pics? All advice greatly appreciated!

I think the "Super Macro" setting is the best you can do. With that set, your closest focus distance is .8". The macro button has a tulip icon; press the button and scroll down to the tulip icon with the "S". That's your super macro. Good luck!

Thanks KurtS, tried the super macro and it wasn't that super lol. I guess I'll try to save up for a better camera or a camera with better macro. Thanks again.

mr merc. it`s all in the Zoom. a 8 or 10 MP camera with a 3x zoom wont be much better. You want to go for a simple cheap ($150-250) 6 mega pixel with a 10 x zoom. Thats great for all your outdoor needs (more than suff.) and brilliant for coins. You get basically get up ontop of them and snap a shot. MfG

Thanks CMG and tights24, I guess I'll experiment a little more with this camera and go get a tripod.

Another question, this camera has a 12X digital zoom, 3X optical zoom. Would I be better off using the digital zoom? Thanks.

Found a copystand on ebay for $25 and should have it by this weekend. I've been reading the manual and experimenting with the settings. Hopefully I'll have some pics up this weekend.

mr merc, don't forget about lighting. I use 4 different light sources, which is contrary to most advice I've seen: 1)Halogen work light like this: 2) Overhead 60W flood (I have recessed flood lights in my basement) 3) Regular bankers lamp with 60W bulb filtered with a "Kimwipe" taped over it. 4) "Natural" desk lamp, a bluish part of the visable spectrum. My theory is to mix all these lights to increase the wavelength range of the lighting, more closely imitating the sun. My point...LIGHTING IS KING (after the camera). LOL Your camera should be fine for coins with macro mode. Just keep the cam at the minimum distance, 4-8 cm. Remember, you have to press the shutter button HALF WAY DOWN to let the cam focus before you snap. If it's out of focus, move back and do another half snap to check. I've depressed my shutter button half way many more times than fully. LOL Definately use zoom, but don't use digital zoom. I've found 2.4-3.4x work well for me using free-hand. IMO, you don't really need that stand if you sit next a table and rest your arms on it. Give is a shot, all my pics are free-hand, like this: Plus you have more options for angled shots free-hand:

BadThad, some good advice, I've got one of those halogen worklights in the garage somewhere, I also got my copy stand in the mail yesterday and will have some pics up soon.

OK,here's my first try. I shot this in super macro mode about 3" away. I need to work on my lighting. This was shot with 2 desk lamps with 40watt bulbs, may have to try the halogen lamp. Image: 1921morgobv.jpg62.59 KB Image: 1921morgrev.jpg83.94 KB

Those are impressive for first attempts. I would honestly try no macro at all, 8 inches away, and zoom until you no longer get "auto focus" with the half button push method. This will allow more light more evenly. You can crop and resize to exactly what you just did with your macros. Regardless, those are nice. Waiting for more now. Oh, and did you ask for a gallery? This will allow 800k files.
