Though I'm always looking for Franklin halves and now have the slabbed SBA set complete, I was thinking of looking at a new small focus.

While looking through some random slabs and loose coins in my PC last night, I stopped on a slabbed 1943-D Jefferson nickel MS65FS. Love the look of those silver Jefferson's, and thought I may take a go at a slabbed FS 1942-45 set.

Any of you have much experience with the silver Jeffersons? I don't know much about the years in the way of major varieties......

There is a 43/2 over date, off the top of my head. Other than that and the 1943-D semi-key, the series is very available and easy to complete, although I'm not sure about 65.

You also need a '44 Henning to round it out!

Thanks for the info. I looked up the 43/2, and it's looks to be a little pricey.

Think I'll go for the set without the varieties, but with the Henning :)
Rest in Peace

It doesn't make a lot of since to stay at 65 (FS or not) on most of them because they are plentiful up to the MS 67 grade (without FS) for most of them.

If you look at the price differences between the 65's and 66's, there is a very small bump. There is a bigger bump to 67, but not unreasonable.

If you toss on the FS on the 67, then they get up in the hundreds of dollars rather quickly. All depends on your love for them.

Moxking, good point. Now that I'm searching, I see exactly what you're talking about.

Have a '42-P type 1 and type 2 slabbed proofs on the way. With only 27,600 minted, I'm pretty stoked to get a hold of them! Will post pics when they arrive.

ElonU,
Go for it. Can't want to see the prizes.
I agree with moxking....try to scope out some of the the higher grades.

My silver set is complete in the raw, I would say all low - mid MS.
Very satisfying set when you complete it....and nickels look so good.
I enjoy nickels very much. The look, the size, they weight...everything about any US nickel is awesome.

One50,

The first shipment of 4 come in last night. I know you guys are advising against it, but I'm going for MS66, and PF65 for the one silver proof. I am also getting all that are bright and have the best eye appeal in the grade. I'm having good success getting them bright, with no toning or spots.

I have a total of 9 of the 12 purchased, and should have others on order within the next few weeks. Again, not going for the errors, RPMs or DDOs, just the main set. I may though pick up a Henning and the 1943/2 to really round it out.

I have learned something in this process. For years, I assumed that all the Jeffersons minted in 1942 were silver alloy. That's not the case! Those made in October and beyond that year were the silver alloy. You learn something new every day in this hobby.

The silver nickels are fun.

I have an MS67 FS type but would love to see pics of your proof.

I would really like a proof.

If you like these as much as I think you will when you finish, maybe take a peek at the US Half Dimes or the Canadian silver 5 cent pieces if you really want to mix it up. I'd probably go with just one of the type coins and call it a day, but the transition from silver to nickel nickels is interesting, just as the transition from large cents and Half Cents to small cents was.

Buckeye,

I made a "mistake" in this process and purchased a '42 proof type 1 (along with the type 2). I didn't know at the time, but the type 1 is not silver (according to the PCGS listings). But, I am super happy I purchased it anyway. It is simply a stunning coin to own, even though it's only a PF63.

When the '42 type 2 proof arrives, I'll be sure to post an image along with some of the others. And you're correct, this is a fun set to collect!

I need to look at my MS67FS too. I may have typed faster than I thought.

Good reason to slow down and pull out some of the coins I own and close out the 9 tabs I have open with ebay in them I'd imagine.

You can show the transition in proof, that is pretty cool really.

Buckeye, here are pics of the '42 proof type 1. Darn thing is almost like a mirror. I didn't think their tech was this good 70 years ago!

Quick reply ... hopefully in support of the OP ..

I have a complete PCGS registry set of these war silver Jefferson in MS66/FS to MS67/FS.

You can find the collection and photos somewhere on the PCGS Registry .. Chesapeake Collection.

These are indeed lovely coins at such grades ... but can be a bit pricy for a few examples.

IMHO the MS65 or so examples are not going to generate any long term investment increase ... although personal appreciation for collecting the series outweighs that every time.

David,

Good points on all fronts, and the second of the last is what's important to me for this particular series.

I'm searching for the best beauty, slabbed, with what I can afford. Some may view it as a waste, or poor judgement. I'm just finding the best within my means, in a hobby I enjoy with a set I want to complete. Nearly all of mine will be MS66, with the exception of an MS65FS and a '42 proof type 2 PF65 :)

I love the series, and here's to the day I'll be able to improve it to all MS67FS!

Well....the rest I needed for the "base" set (minus major varieties) are on order! I have 10 of the 12 in hand, and will post pictures when the last arrives! Stoked about completing this set!
