I believe that the coin falls just short of Mint State. There is a rub on the cheek, and there are some light hairlines that might indicate some cleaning.

Heritage aucions as recently sold certified, similar coins for $200. Here is a link.

The piece has been dipped. Some collectors like them natural these days although that can be a matter of taste.

I have to agree with billjones. It appears the obverse was wiped at some point.

At the very worst, it's an AU-58, although there are only a couple areas on the very highest points that show any circulation friction at all. In hand the luster might save it to a full mint state, as I don't see any luster breaks.

Dipped or not is really hard to tell on this coin from the photos only.

However, I myself would pass on this coin simply because of the very visible dark line on the cheek on the obverse. My eyes are immediately drawn to that "defect" and it would always bother me every time I saw this coin.

If it's being sold as a choice mint state $300 piece then move along quickly. If it's being sold as $100 AU piece then it's worth considering. I would view $150 as "all the money" for that one.

I would pass on this, an essentially common coin in a questionable condition. I think that obverse (especially the scratch on the cheek) will always bug you after this discussion.

Thanks all.. It's being sold as an AU-55 for $125. I appreciate everyone's thoughts on it.
