Hello everyone, I am new to coin collecting. I have some old coins that I have collected over the years, and have recently become more interested in collecting. I have a question. I have no reference materials, and ended up purchasing the book "U.S. Coin Digest The Complete Guide to Current Market Values". What's your opinion of this particular book, or should I get another. At this point I am mainly interested in finding out what my coins are worth. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Susan

I would pick up "A Guide Book of United States coins" also referred to as the Red Book due to its cover. Another really good reference book and just all around good read is "The Experts Guide to Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins" by Q. David Bowers. It was full of history and a lot of good information. Both are published by Whitman Publishing and available on Amazon.

Welcome to the hobby, it is addictive, fun, interesting, and did I say addictive?

Get a Red Book (it says RedBook on the cover jbakic ), it'll be a huge help. For help with grading, get "The Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States coins", otherwise simply known as the ANA Grading Standards Guide. It'll give detailed info and pictures for grading any US circulation coin ever made. Good luck, and welcome to the forum!

I agree get The Red Book, it has good basic information on grading, some history on the coins and Misc information on coin history. This is a must have for any beginners wanting basic pricing guides and basic info.

I would definitely recommend a " Red Book", and the Krause catalogues can be helpful too.
But another good way to get an idea of coin values is to watch lots of online auctions.
See what other people are prepared to pay for coins. Get an idea of what various coins are selling for.
Good luck with your coin collecting, Susan!
