LOL, I got a kick outta this. The Littleton coin co. (what a rip-off) has this ancient roman coin from 268-270 A.D. for sale in Near mint condition. They also have a picture of it. A real test for all you hard-core graders out there. Here is the link.

Your link hasn't quite copied right, I think the pipe symbols have fooled the forum's URL detector. Try this link.

The one pictured, labelled "near mint state", is certainly a very well preserved example; they're normally much worse than this. Assuming, of course, it hasn't been tooled; I wouldn't trust Littleton to be able to spot an expertly done tooling job.

I personally am of the opinion that no ancient coin (with the possible exception of the gold ones) can rate much above EF, simply because all non-gold ancients have needed to be cleaned and/or restored. I know others disagree with me. But I wouldn't hesitate to call that one "good EF", and wouldn't be surprised if ICG graded it an MS grade.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Sap ... no one here is going to "disagree with you" on a matter of ancients.
