I have just recently had my passion for coin collecting reignited. I am trying to educate myself since the last time I was really into collecting was before the advent of the internet! Here is one of my dad's raw Morgan dollars. I suppose it was actually my mom's dad's or even her grandfather's. In any case, I tried to light it well but it keeps showing up dark in the camera. It is shiny and has some blue toning around the one edge. It is the same on the other side. I don't think it was in circulation because it is still so beautiful. What would you grade it at and do you have any tips for photographing? Thanks!

The luster is really not showing through as well as I'd like. I am reading up on lighting thanks to gymcoachdon pointing me over to a lighting setup section.

Try using 2 LED's pointed diag from both left and right. Find the sweet spot for minimal glaring. Should work a little better.

It's either AU-58 or MS-63. Without being able to see possible luster breaks it's tough to warrant any more precise of an opinion.

This time I put it on a flat white piece of card stock and shined a daylight florescent (I didn't have an LED handy) on it. You can see some of the shininess on the left side. I'm still experimenting with photographing it. I'm using an iphone 6s but I'm not having much success. It is still coming out looking dark- which it isn't.

I'll say 63 and nice toning.

MS-62 because of large detracting obv. scratch-slightly below average luster and eye appeal

Tough one. It's an attractive coin and is very clean EXCEPT for the huge hit over the eye. The toning is natural and attractive.
I'll say MS-62+

I'd go with 62 as well, but it's a shot 63. The hit is almost perfectly placed for a eyebrow.

None of my coins are very valuable, but this one is my favorite. I keep getting it out just to hold it and look at it. It makes me happy!
