This 1962 penny is part of an inherited collection. The notes say hanging "2" variety. Is it consider collectible? What makes it "Hanging"?

if you look right above the 2 in the date, you will see a curved line that turns to the left. this is a die crack, it is actually pretty common, but this is an interesting coin, and in good condition. You can see on coinsandcanada.com for values.

Look at the top of the "2".There is a "hook" that comes off the top of the 2 and curls to the left. This is what constitutes the "hanging" of the 2.
I've just become aware of this myself.I believe that there are other "hanging" examples in other years.

The line referred to as the "hanging" 2 is not a die crack but a die clash, it is the impression of the queens chin and throat.
There are many years in the 50s and 60s that have " hangers". I have a 1963 with a triple die clash.

Here's a link to another thread on here that shows a hanging 2 (4th picture):https://goccf.com/t/174764

Like they said, it's a die clash. Which means the obverse (the Queen side) and the reverse (the leaf side) dies hit each other once because there was no coin planchet to be hit. So they leave an imprint of each other on the other die. Here, the hanging 2 is an imprint of the Queen's chin.

Edit: they might have even hit each other multiple times, which causes a double hanging or triple hanging, etc..

Hi Dcnw

Check on the obverse side, just under the chin. It's hard to tell from your photo, but often there was a clash of a backwards "2" visible there, or at least part of one. The last year of the date was found clashed on several years of the hanging digit series.

Canacoin, I inherited a very large and varied collection. I am still wading through it, but it is very eclectic. US and World Coins, some ancients, tokens, medals. Little bit of everything. I sometimes regret that I am not a collector, but appreciate my relative's generosity as well as the opportunity to learn such interesting material.
