I thought it be fun to share photos of my 1884 O Morgan with the group. It's an NGC graded coin (MS 61). I don't know if the photos show it well, but it is blistering white. Grab your sunglasses. With over 9,700,000 produced, it's not rare (not even close)...but it's pretty, that's for sure!

Would that ding in the lower jaw be considered a bag mark?

Yep, they are bagmarks on the jaw and under the eye which is why it only graded at 61. A very nice coin otherwise

Right, those deep jaw and cheek hits just destroy this coin.

Do you all think this coin was properly graded by NGC? I am just curious what your opinions might be.

I think it's gorgeous but I believe the jaw hit is what's holding it back. That's a shame because she's a beauty.

I would personally say MS-62 but I suspect NGC noticed something else in hand like degraded luster that dropped it down to a 61. Many of the "blast white" coins out there have been dipped a time or two.

Thanks for your thoughts. If NGC had thought the coin was improperly cleaned, they would have noted that on the slab, right?

PS - Dipping would be considered improper cleaning?

I stumbled upon this Morgan on ebay today. NGC graded it an MS 63, however there seems to be considerable bag marks on the coin. I am curious, just how subjective is grading? To my eyes, the two coins (mine above and this one) don't differ that much. As always, thanks in advance for your insights.

Very nice coin!

IMO it got the grade because of the cheek and in one of your pics the hair appears a little flat and lacking detail near the bottom. That will certainly affect grade.. Don't know if it presents this way in person.
