Although I just recently started collecting, I remember sitting at the kitchen table with my grandfather some decades ago and watching as he cleaned his silver coin collection with Tarn-X and a Brillo pad. Can't recall the coins, but I do recall the smell! You know what, those coins were super shiny afterwards.

I bought junky low quality stuff. It's hard to buy quality over quantity when you just begin collecting.

I didn't buy the rarer stuff years ago when they were cheaper.

I'm still a relatively new coin collector, but this applies to all things I collect (military, stamps, coins, paper currency, old books, general antiques. Geez I should condense my interests). My biggest regret is buying from major dealers at flea markets instead of searching for real bargains from people who don't know what they have.

That reminded me a bit of a lyric from a 70s song, Carly Simon I think - "these are the good old days."

Oh! I remember something now!
I used to always think it was "V.B.D." on the Lincoln Cent instead of "V.D.B."... That was like a year and a half ago now though, lol.

I seem to have a skewered sense of value when it comes to looking at the same types of coins or tokens on the Internet ( ebay) or in person (at a coin show).
I will walk away from a dealer at a coin show when I believe he has priced a coin too high, but will turn around and pay more for the same coin on ebay.
I do not understand this aberration, because it makes no logical sense to me. One would think the opposite would be true, because I can actually hold the item in my hand at a coin show, rather than trust the images in an ebay auction.
I'm curious whether anyone else has experienced this bizarre phenomenon.

Yeah. Only problem is that I did not have the income them. Seems like coin prices fluctuate with my pay grade.

I used brasso once on some pennies. I was about 10 at the time...

I learned my lesson though.

my biggest mistake (and sometimes I still make this one) is to not understand my collecting goals and be committed to them.

An example is with modern commemorative coins. I had no collecting theme settled in my mind and I did not know if I wanted to collect $1 or half dollars, if I wanted OGP or to put in an album or if I wanted certified.

So I ended up with some of each, which was a major waste of money and time.

Eventually I decided I wanted OGP for the whole series..after I had too many other mixed up items.

Just one example, but always the same idea...I have learned to know what my end game desire is before I jump in and start buying.

Not buying Conder tokens back when I started collecting because I couldn't locate or afford the book.

Back then MS tokens were $2 apiece but the book, which was almost unobtainable, was well over $100. Well out of reach for an 11 year old. Today the book is still $125 and a little easier to get, but the common tokens in MS cost $150 - $200 each. I have over 1,000 tokens today, but no telling how many I would have today if I had started 25 years earlier.
