There is no actual rule.
Obviously, with all the Days of and How Far Back threads, there is no limit to the number of photos per thread.
However, I personally prefer a limit to one or two pictures per actual post (be it the initial post or a reply). The reason for this is simple, it makes page loads more efficient, especially for those on slower connections. There are only 15 replies per pages, so having only one or two images per reply means only 15 to 30 images a page.
