IMHO, ebay is the new retail pricing. For the coins I look at, people are paying premiums over what I can buy at shows and shops. Of course, there are exceptions on ebay, but the norm is retail+ pricing in my experience.

For higher end stuff on ebay, I see sellers mostly avoiding the auction format and going with Buy It Now pricing. For the items I tend to look for, this almost always seems to be 25-35% above retail, so the stuff just sits unsold forever. On higher end stuff, I see better prices at shows IF you can find what you are looking for (which has been hard lately). Heritage and Great Collections has been better for the higher end stuff for me lately (mostly Lincolns).

For the more reasonably priced stuff that goes at auction, you can still get some good prices on ebay. Show or the LCS can be a reliable place to get decent prices, but there are bargains to be had on ebay here if you put in some work.

That's been my experience at least.

For many, ebay is the way to advertise. Then the deals are made outside of eBay/Paypal at 15% less. Do you really think David Lawrence's 1794 dollar is going to sell on ebay?
