This was the only interesting find in tonights box of pennies. I did get a G4 1918 wheatie and a few 50's wheats also.

It looks like some kind of strike thru to me, what do you think?

KurtS, wouldn't a die chip be raised on the coin?

Ah...I was fooled by the lighting. Perhaps something was struck into the coin that later fell out?

Maybe it fell out or it never stuck to the coin at all.
This is a zinc cent but the affected area looks like the copper is still intact.

If the copper is still intact, I would think it had to of been an error in the zinc planchet before it was copper plated. Anything that significant after copper coating would have broken through the copper.

If a bit of something got onto the die, the copper wouldn't be intact. Possibly a lamination on the zinc?
