1888 die crack in V
Some time ago there was a discussion re the triple 888's but there was no mention of a die crack in the V
Houndog Bill I think you know about this ---please enlighten me

Hi fourmack, As you probably know there are many 1888's with all three 8's re-punched. However of them all there's perhaps three maybe four that really stand out and can easily be seen.
It would help if I could see the reverse.

After looking at the reverse I'm not sure what discussion your referring to.
I don't see any doubling on the eight's and this obverse is from the group that's most common. There is a very nice coin with all eight's distinctly repunched that does have a die crack at the V in VICTORIA but it's to the outside of the V.
Perhaps your thinking of this coin?
The coin shown has a faint die crack at the V in VICTORIA it's hard to see in the picture's so I also included a photo of the die crack from a coin that's in a later die state.
