This came from a mint set, very nice specimen. I did some research, and it appears that quite a few really nice quarters came out of Denver that year, many more than Philly. Anyway, what do you think it grades?

That's a pretty coin. I'm usually hard on myself when it comes to Washington quarters because I send out quite a few modern date (65-95) and have pretty good success on the grading aspect. Your coin has a few distracting marks on Washington's profile and a triple slash (albiet small) in the field to the left of the mouth. With that said, this should grade out comfortably at the 66+ level. NGC will grade this a 67, PCGS will tag it with either 66/66+. But all in all, nice example but the pops are high in 67. One of the few dates during this time that the mint got the strike really strong.

I got pretty excited at first, but when I saw the population reports I realized exactly what you said. In an era of pretty bad coins, Denver got the quarter right in 1970.

Yeah, 1970-D is one of those dates that the graders are looking at the absolute best grade because of how high the pops are. Now if you can find a 69-P in this same look, now that's a home run!
