Certified Set: All The Same Grade Or Highest Grade In Each Date?

logantrky Valued Member United States 104 Posts	Posted 05/08/2016 9:25 pm Poll Question If you were putting together a certified set of coins, would you buy them all in the same grade (ex: all MS-64 coins) or would you purchase the highest grade you can purchase in each year? I'm putting together a Franklin Set and would like your thoughts. denco7 Pillar of the Community United States 2543 Posts	Posted 05/08/2016 10:39 pm Why get a "graded set" if you are just going to get all different grades. You might as well collect them raw. It would be a lot cheaper and you could get nicer coins for your money. I have a "set" of PCGS MS64 Peace dollars going. I have seen some really cheap MS65 coins that I have passed on as well as some really nice NGC MS64 dollars that I have also passed on. Because my "set" is PCGS MS64 Peace dollars. Not a good idea if collecting a series with so many cleaned, dipped, recolored, and doctored coins. Try to buy a 1914D MS64RD lincoln in raw is a very very bad proposition. Debrajc Pillar of the Community United States 4211 Posts	Posted 05/09/2016 11:07 am I have never collected a slabbed set of anything but my OCD would kick in and I would want them all the same grade and graded by the same grading company. Like Denco is doing with his Peace dollars. But that's just me! I can understand buying the highest in each grade.. Report this Post to the Staff
davec13 Pillar of the Community United States 757 Posts	Posted 05/09/2016 6:20 pm I'm working on a Lincoln set right now, I'm going for all MS64RD. I was having a very hard time finding an 09S in 64RD and almost bought a 64RB. I'm glad I held out as they all look nice together. I know I could get the later dates in 65, 66, or 67 without much trouble, but it just wont look right if everything else is all 64. On the flip side though I am working on an Ike registry set and I'm shooting for top pop coins in that set. I guess it all depends on what you are working on registry or personal sets.
