This interesting little coin was the "junior member," at least with respect to size, in the five piece Panama - Pacific set that was issued for the exposition that had that name. The Panama - Pacific Exposition was held to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal, but it was also an announcement that the City of San Francisco had recovered from the devastating earthquake that had severely damaged the city almost a decade before. The coin set included a half dollar, a gold dollar, a $2.50 gold piece and two massive $50 gold "slugs." The profile on the obverse of this piece is not a baseball player. He is a symbolic tribute to the workers who built the canal at a considerable risk to their lives. Tropical diseases provided a challenge that was equal to the engineering complexities that were involved in building the waterway. So what would you grade this piece? PCGS had their opinion, and may provide your assessment.

Is there no interest in this piece? Should I have posted it among the non circulating issues?

I can see it going MS65. The color/luster/surfaces look gem (or darn close) to me. Does anyone else think the obverse could be used as a Lou Gehrig Commemorative?

I certainly have no experience grading these, but would venture that 65 looks about right. Beautiful coin.

I'll say MS-64 for this one. The Palace of Fine Arts, one of the many buildings of the original Pan Pacific Exposition, was preserved and is a nice place to visit in San Francisco. Have been there a few times.

This post properly belongs in the USA Commemorative forum .. that said ... lovely coin indeed wherever it is posted. I'm in at PCGS MS64 ... an outstanding surviving example of the fabulous Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915. Thanks for sharing. David

PCGS graded this Pan-Pac gold dollar MS-64. The coin has fewer marks than what appear in my photo, but there is a thin scratch that is only visible with a 10X glass that probably knocked it down a point. The trouble is it doesn't say anything about "grading" in the section, and I've found that posts get more play and more reads here. I would also submit that the "old" commemorative coins are part of the classic series. I've got a complete type set of the "old" commemorative coins, and I could post them here over time if you would like. Quote: Billjones, do you have the $50 gold pieces to go with it? The short answer is, "yes." I'll post them if you like.
