I dont think these are actual coins... If I recall, I believe Littleton Coin Company makes/sells these.

Littleton does market these coins. However, they are REAL, coinage minted on the sovereign lands of the Sioux Nation. Many tribes have been granted the right to mint their own legal tender.

Think of the coins as though they were minted by a foreign nation. They are REAL currency within the tribal reservation. I've seen these in Littleton's catalogs many times and I think they are amazingly beautiful. If you go to Littleton's website, you'll find more information about the meaning of the engravings. Jack

Commemorative, not currency. Just a souvenir.
The "Native American Mint" is based in Torrence, CA.

Had no idea they were made in Torrence. When you have the kind of revenue that a casino brings in, I guess you could have them made anywhere.

The advertising is a little unclear regarding the use of these coins. They each have a denomination (1 cent - 1 Dollar), and no where on the coin is the word "commemorative" or "souvenir" mentioned. However, in a separate area of the catalog, they are referred to as "Commemorative coins."

The 1925 Stone Mountain Half Dollar (just a random example) was also a "commemorative coin" and intended as US legal tender. I believe they are legal tender on the reservation, but it's very possible that Arrows And Rays has better information than I.

Perhaps we have a member of the Sioux Nation on the forum who could clarify for us. Jack

I wonder if the Sioux use them on the reservation or if the average Sioux knows about them...

According to this article,

Quote:
The coins would not be legal tender and could not be used as money, which would be a violation of federal law.

"They won't be used as currency," Bishop said. "We'd get in a lot of trouble if we did that."

I had to show this post to my wife (Cherokee/Sioux) & I couldn't get my CC out fast enough
for her. Those are handsome pieces.

edit: APMEX has some single pieces from various tribes,
but 50. apiece. Whoa
