Hi all,

I have a coin here that was discovered in Greece several years ago while on holiday there. it was away from the road and the disturbing of a large branch unearthed it.
Here are the details:

Weight is 16 grams. I'll need a more accurate set of scales to be more precise, but this I assume tends to hint to either an As or a Dupondius.

The design on the rear of the coin almost perfectly matches this trace of a Sestertius found on the wiki: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/nu...%20P%20S%20C

The reference to Minerva replacing Neptune on another coin in this description could be relevant, as I cannot make out the identity of the figure on the bow. Best guess, I'd say it is Minerva.

the Inscription COS III PP SC indicates that it was probably minted circa. 132 - 134 a.d.

Regarding the galley design - has anyone seen something like this before?

I apologise in advance for the quality of the photos, and if needed I can take some more.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Adrian and welcome to CCF.

Your coin purports to be something similar to this: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2162804

This is outside my collecting area, but the style seems to be way off and the surfaces just don't look ancient to me. IMO, this is a modern tourist fake

Hi Biancasdad,

Thanks for replying. While the knockoff verdict is always a possibility ad I am definitely no expert, I have had a little bit of experience with aging newer antiques and would have to say that if it were a knockoff, then it would have to be an old (I would imagine 30+ years old) and very realistically made. It I hard to see in the photos here but there is slight pitting and metal decay on one edge - I woudn't imagine a knock off would look so realistic. there is metal wear on the raised edges of the bust and of the galley, indicating wear over time.
Also, with the weight being near spot on 16 grams the knock-offees would have had to have done some serious research - not something you find in souvenir shops often.

At first I thought your coin might be a Paduan copy, but upon closer examination I believe it's a much later cast copy. It's overall appearance just doesn't look right to me.

It is a nice trinket.
No more and no less.

The weight of a 2nd century AE As would be in the 9 gram range while a dupondius around 12 grams. That aside the image provided positively screams
"cast fake".
The last thing I would say is it is definitely in the style of the so called "Paduan" medallions made over a period during the last few hundred years. I believe the genuine coins of Hadrian with ship reverse also lack the sail which figures prominently on the Paduans.
Generally they weigh in at around 30 grams
A genuine sestertius would average about 25 grams.
But some Paduans are very collectible too !

As for similar type I have this Hadrian dupondius in my collection

As you have noted on your coin "crownless"
As to the figure on the prow ........
I believe it depicts ........ some guy standing on the prow !

Thanks to all who replied. Shame it's not one of those stub your toe finds :), but an old paduan is cool nonetheless.

Cheers guys!
