Anyone care to venture a grade for this? And second to opine on if it was cleaned, or more likely how harshly it was cleaned. It's in what looks like an older NGC slab.

If anyone cares about the variety it's an O-115, Square base 2. Looks like some interesting doubling on the date or something funky going on there.

Thanks!

Very nice. AU-58. May have been cleaned but appears to have loads of luster left. Perfectly acceptable in my book.

AU-58 would be my verdict, too. :) I can't be 100% sure on if it has been cleaned or not (I don't think so), so I won't say much about that, but to me it looks like a very decent AU-58.

Nice coin you have there!

To me sharpness grade is no better than AU-55. The question is, how much have the surfaces been altered? It might be too much.

technically it looks AU55 to me also. one thing I noticed is that there appears an "X" across the jaw which someone maybe was attempting to hide by cleaning it up a little to make it look less noticeable. not sure if would grade straight but I like it

I see it as an AU-55.

The coin HAS been cleaned. A 100+ year-old coin should NEVER be blast-white, with the exception of Morgan dollars. Now the question is HOW the coin has been cleaned. A simple dipping I can live with as most of the luster still seems to be present. A mechanical cleaning that leaves hairlines on the surface is unacceptable. I can't really tell from these pictures one way or another.

Agree AU-55; left obverse field looks suspicious for sure.
