Ok so here is a 1989 penny that I found and the letters in the word WE TRUST seem to be half missing. I know the penny needs to be cleaned and from what I understand cleaning them is bad, so I apologize for that. Is this just normal wear and tear on the coin. The rim of the coin doesn't seem to be worn off but the letters do. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Sarah

It looks like it was Struck Through Grease. Can you post full pic of the front and back?

It's a common error that happened during the strike. Mint dies are used to strike hundreds of thousands of blanks at high frequencies. To avoid friction and wear, a type of grease was applied for lubrication. If poorly done, excess grease would get into incuse areas of the die (WE TRUST in your case) and prevent the metal from pushing into those areas during the strike. The mint doesn't like these types of errors but many get through the system. Very recently, they've changed the lubrication process for certain coins, making " Struck Through Grease" errors presumably impossible.
