When sitting down at a desk or table while inspecting your coins and enjoying them, what do you lay your coins on. Is there some sort of mat for this purpose that is safe for the coins?

Most of my good coins are in Dansco albums, you can see both sides of the coins so no need to remove them. The loose coins I do have I usually place them on a scrap of velvet that I had laying around. It works pretty well as a background for pictures too.

I've used a felt pad that I had laying around. It's actually a demonstration pad for magicians (it's like a big, soft mouse pad). I have been wondering what other people use. I was using a towel for the first few days and then figured it just wasn't proper. :)
Actually, if I'm going through rolls I just sit on the couch, turn on the TV or stereo and dump them on a towel in my lap. Keepers go in one pile and the rest goes into a box.

At the very least, a thick bath towel. I can't even remember the number of times I've dropped coins while looking at them.

Soft thin cotton cover with a little "pile" in it (like corduroy or thin velor) affixed snugly over the surface. This keeps the coins from scratching and allows me to slip my gloved fingers under the coin without too much trouble. My challenge comes under the microscope...the viewing disk is not covered and I have to be more careful.

I use my oldest, just-about-to-throw-away t-shirts. They've been washed so many times that they're about the softest things in the house. They're also my photographic backgrounds when I'm using black.

Now don't laugh but I actually do all my coin handling on my poker table, its nice soft felt with a littler padding under it, works well for me and it has a rail that goes around it so if I drop one it doesn't roll off the table.

I've found that if you use cloth to lay the coins on there is a chance they may slide off the table so I've switched to sheets of 100 grit sandapaper. No slipage there. Now I've heard this is not to good since some of the grit may end up on the coins so I have to end up spitting on them to get that off. Never even really thought about it to much. I have a towel on a table and that is all I ever use. I guess some time back I made sure it was a very tight weave so no lint.

I like to hold my coins with Visegrips. That way I won't put any fingerprints on my PRIZED possessions. My only problem now is how to fix the serrated dents on the edges of all my coins ;) Maybe I will get out the grinder.

I like to make a big bubble bath and float my coins on the bubbles. That way no human hand touches my precious gems.
OK....maybe I have gone too far. I'll stop now.
