Greetings from Victoria,
I study the grading advice but still cannot decide hwta grade the 1885 five cents is. Is it good enough to be worth paying a grading service? I would be grateful for your advice

Ill say regardless of whether it's EF or AU(I personally think it's AU) it's worth grading since it's at least EF and trends for around ~200. Also it looks like a small 5 to me not a large one.

My vote is that it's in the AU range, not EF

The devices sure look AU50, but I'm not sure if anything to the rims would affect it. Not sure if that's just old toning or some kind of damage

I believe this would be a small, re-engraved 5/5, pg. 315 of the 2010 Charlton. One of two varieties of re-engraved 5s for that date. Actually more scarce than the small 5/5 but you would be hard pressed to have ICCS grade it anything other than a "small 5".

I have yours and the other version of the re-engraved 5 in my collection as you can see here:

I brought this coin in to ICCS personally and had Brian look it over. He said it was only a small 5 and was not worth grading. He told me the only 1885s he accredits actually have what looks like a 5/3. Apparently they used to be referred to as "5/3s"

Others may attest to this as I have never sent a coin for grading but CCCS may be your best bet in this instance. I'm not sure of the process but you may have to reference the 2010 Charlton when you submit it.

Nice coin by the way!
