When I search rolls of pennies and put them in piles of pre-82's 82's, and post-82's. The question is what should I do with these piles of of coins? It would take me days to roll them all. For now I just have them in buckets. Any advice? -PP

As for me this is what I do all cents from 82 to date I cash in and 81 or lower I put into a bag marked copper cents. Unless you are looking for error or varieties coins I don't keep them even the wheats I find go into the copper bag. The only wheats I save are low minted or fine examples.

Cash in the bags at the bank its easier then rolling or hang onto them if you don't want to dump them.

You're saying to get a $50 bag, extract the copper ones and then replace the ones I took out of the bag with zincs. Sounds like a great idea! -PP

I paid one of my kids to roll all my copper pennies I have a $130 worth and a Coffee full needing to be gone through .What am I going to do with these ?My standing joke is that it is the kids inheritances but lately I'm leaning towards selling them to buy other coins like a 20 cent coin.

If you re-roll the copper cents as you go it doesn't take that long. I roll all of the coppers after I go thru a $25 box. I use a coin tube but I don't trust it to count so I also weigh the whole tube full of pennies on my gram scale to verify the count. Once they are rolled I store thm in another $25 boxarked "Copper"
Are you hand sorting or using a Rydale?

You really need to give more info. Are you doing boxes at a time or just a couple of rolls?
I disagree about mixing wheaties with regular copper. Unless the price of copper goes through the roof, I think wheaties will always have a premium over 1959-81 cents. Why do new collectors go nickel roll hunting? Because it's the only series where you have a decent chance of getting an "old" (pre-1962) coin.
If you have a roll of wheaties, you are guaranteed to find coins that are at least 50 years old. Even if you don't care about the profit, it'd be a great gift for a new coin collector!

You should also separate your 1982's into the 2 groups. It just takes a few seconds to distinguish the 1982 coppers from zincs. They actually taste quite a bit different from each other. The copper ones have a metallic taste while the zinc ones don't really taste like anything. I've gotten to the point where I can put a handful in my mouth and separate them that way. Give it a try.

I seriously hope Dreyfus is joking around, if not, I'm willing to be your sick %90 of the time. There are much better ways to determine the difference lol.

Happens a lot. Someone asks a question and it gets lost. Meanwhile back to the original question. What to do with all the coins. Simple. Go to any bank and ask for a coin bag. They are heavy canvas material. Put all your coins in that bag and take them all to the bank. Ask for the bag back for the next time. First ask if there is a charge for just taking in coins. If so, ask what is the smallest amount to open an account. Then open an account and now when you bring in your coins, just have them put into your account. If you need the money, just wait a few hours and go back and withdraw it or have them give you an ATM card and use that to withdraw your money. Always leave some in the account for future deposits.

Here is what I do more in depth: I usually search boxes of pennies. I hand sort them and put them into piles of 82's pre-82's post-82's. Sorry dreyfus, but when it comes to the pile of 82s I will flip each one and if it has a harmonious ring, if it does it's copper. There seems to be a lot of discrimination against 82's so I put the copper ones in a bag separate from the other copper pennies. and, I always hang on to my Wheaties!! This week I am ordering a $50 bag, but I still have't cashed-out my bucket of zincolns. And there's no way I'm going to hand roll all 4000+/- in my bucket. help -Max

Also, it may not be clear though if you want to save them instead of taking to a bank. Why waste time rolling them. Leave in anything that is air tight. Even a jar is better than a bucket. However, if no valuable ones, I still think the bank is the best place.
