Anyone know who or why someone would reprocess 100s of rolls of zinc pennies. Did the mint at one time recall, pull in and rezinc 1943 pennies for some reason?

The reason I ask is that I know someone thats got, lets just say a lot of rolls of what they say are reprocessed zinc pennies. I was told they were purchased back in 1962-65 in rolls, put in their safe for almost 40 years and just recently gotten back out.

Also, they told me upfront that they know they are reprocessed. Didn't say how they knew, but before I could ask about them we got disconnected. I plan on asking about them when we talk again next week. But it seems strange that someone would rezinc this many pennies when they aren't worth all that much, especially back then.

But I think I recall my father talking to another collected when I was a kid about the mint doing some kind of a rezinc on pennies becuase the edges didn't get covered and rusted really fast.

Thought I would threw this out and see what you have to say about it or know about any original rezincs from the mint,

I've got a few of them too. I too always wondered why anyone would waste the time and money to produce something that is only worth a few cents. Slight exageration about the few cents but they do sell for about $0.25 each around me in AU grades so why reprocess them? I don't think the Mint would ever recall a coin and redo the thing for any reason especially a cent. I've always like those and have about 30 rolls in AU to MS grades of various Mints. Some of the reprocessed ones appear to almost be a proof so who thinks they are kidding who with those. At least the Copper Plated ones do sell for about $5 or more as a novelty. I have some of those too.

It seems a bit crazy to me too, unless somebody was planning to package them as a date set and sell at a good profit? There are countless cases of cheap coins being put in a flashy "investment" folder and sold for 10X their actual market value.

Well after talking to him about these coins, he says there were countless rolls of them done and I am not talking 20-50 rolls here. We're talking about 100s of them and back in the early 60s. Sure beats the heck out of me why someone back them would go to the expense of cleaning old coin, replating them and rolling them at what had to be a loss/loss situation back then.

On the other hand, look how many people are going nuts over wheats and memorials bringing 2-3 each in scrap cost. Back then a penny was more valueable abd maybe they were planning for resale of them down the road. I see a lot of replated 43s on ebay going for 300-1000% profit.
