Rocky, I think that little line might just be a part of the design? This one is the same:

rocky-
Checked all my 68's and they have the same line.
It appears that this is the only year that line
runs straight across. On all other years it is
on an angle.

Rocky, just wanted to say though, if anyone is ever going to discover a new variety in 1968/1969 SD's, I'd place my bet on you.

@Alexer. Excellent illustrations!

@ Rocky. Never heard of an 1968 Island ghost.

But the 1972 silver dollar ghost is actually a doubling of the canoeists.

So perhaps a 1968 Island Ghost is doubling of the island? An example can be found here (More errors and varieties):

i found the paddler and the ghost. on a 1968 nickel dollar. also found 2 new boulder on the 1968 nickel dollar. I was checking another collectors sets. I asked at the meeting about the ghost on the island. none of them ever heard tell of it. one collector told check this coin. well its not going to be easy to photograph. I will be picking up a couple more camera pieces in the next few weeks. I will use focus stacking. I should be able to show these errors. finally some thing different. maybe some body here. has the paddler ghost or the 2 boulders on the island. I sure would like to see them.
