it is almost definitely gold plated.there were no gold planchets at the mint at that time that I know of. your only 100% positive answer will come when images can be provided.

Used in pendants as jewelry , also in belt buckles for guys belts.

it wasnot used in jewelery though, it has been in a plastic case for years.... and if it was plated it would look more even with no tarnishing... could it be some type of weird patenation?

$20 coin before and after plating.
Nothing to worry about.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...
