I didn't realize what a beautiful coin these are, even in circulated condition. From the LCS foreign silver box for $14. How did I do?

That's just a few cent over melt value, so that's actually well done!

I fully agree that it's a very nice coin to look at. Keep your eyes open for an uncirculated MTT: they're still being produced for what I know (all dated 1780) so it should be possible to get your hands on one for not much more money. And trust me, they're even nicer when uncirculated.

If you got that for $14 then you got a steal of a lifetime...that "V" in AVST means its an original Thaler and not a restrike. The re-strikes have a "U" in AVST.

It was my understanding that it appears as "U" on the originals, and as "V" on the restrikes.

99.9% of all 1780's are restrikes... Anyway, I thought that the appearance of a mint mark below the feet of the eagle was an indication of being a 'genuine' 1780 Thaler: restrikes don't have it. And I don't see it here.

EDIT:

Here's a link to the site where I learned a lot about the Thalers: http://www.theresia.name/en/svergleich.html
