the dollars from the 1950 plus 1968. I would like to understand. what is it that makes them a variety. is it because of the island. are the water lines part of that. while checking some coins. I found some that are different.say they are different because of die polishing. does that make them a simple error only. I am very sure this new error is going to surface. but what does it take to make it a new variety. I have checked alot of these coins. I could see where the die is coming apart. but if they polished this die enough. the face of the coin changes. so again is this only and error. all replies greatly appreciated. I would like to here your thoughts on this.

I'm not sure where you are leading. Hubs(punches) are used to impress the designs into the working die blanks. Each working die makes xxx coins before it fails completely. As each working die loses some of its crispness or is marred, the die is polished to make the fields much cleaner. But that also loses parts of the shallow design elements. Depending on when in the striking cycle or die wear pattern that the coin was struck, the coin will appear different. Depending upon the naked eye appearance, certain stages of missing or weak elements for the 1950 have been assigned arbitrary names based upon what a fully clean, early strike was supposed to look like. There are no "new" varieties going to be discovered for 1950 or '68 ... it's just the degree of initial coin design loss that gets assigned a name. I, personally, wouldn't even call them varieties, because no design element was actually changed .. they just wore away.

okiecoiner thank you. I agree with you. the coin I have found and error on is in the year 2000. I think it comes from die polishing. so why even bother. this error will surface very soon. you have answered my question. I am not even going to bother waste the time on it. thank you so much. have a great one

after doing some research. die polishing if I am reading this information correctly. if the image on the coin changes slightly. it is not an error nor is it a variety. thank you so much I understand now.
