It is far more likely to be a normal copper penny that has been silver-washed or silver plated to make it look like a florin.

Without seeing pictures, all I can add is to weigh it. If it weighs the same as a florin, then it might be a mint error. If it weighs the same as a normal copper penny, then it's a plated coin, and technically still illegal to own in Britain.

My cousin has a cupro-nickel decimal UK penny and a letter from The Royal Mint certifying that it was struck on a cupro-nickel blank.

I suggest Carbay501 sends his penny to The Royal Mint asking if it was struck on a cupro-nickel blank and (most importantly) asking them to return it and enclosing a cheque for it to be addressed signed for.

An email to the Mint would be a good first step in case their policy has changed.

It is relatively to nickel plate a bronze coin in a high school chemistry laboratory.

Easy to make them look like genuine off metal strikes.

I agree with Pertinax. Only The Royal Mint could confirm if it is genuine.

I'm inclined to think that it's been plated, as The Royal Mint didn't produce any cupro-nickel coins for the UK in 1937, although I suppose there might have been stocks of the metal lying around for certain colonial coins like Fiji or Jamaican pennies.
