But I was not happy to receive it because it was from a big name charity using it as a marketing tool to get folks to donate. I'm sure many of you have had this happen to you. Problem is, where do I draw the line--I already donate to certain favorite charities. Guess I will send them a check, too, otherwise I will feel guilty keeping that 1995 D nickel.Oh well. Postage: Nonprofits dont have to pay postage. Printing and packaging: Should have found someone to donate it. Admin costs: Find volunteers Moral to this: They should have sent a dollar.

Non-profits pay postage, Congresspeople don't necessarily.
gussyboy--the nickel is just what you called it--marketing. The 'charity' knows human nature. Just spend the nickel. I give my kids all the stickers we get and I don't give it a 2nd thought. If you already have charities to which you give, there's no need to add another just because they send you a nickel.
If you were going to give anyway, then go for it.

DO NOT SEND THEM ANYTHING. This is charity request scam. They send you something to make you feel guilty and then you send them money to cover what they sent you. They in turn sell your name as a CHUMP, SUCKER, DUMMY to other charitable organizations and you get more and more and more of these. Eventually you'll get calendars, your return address stamps, a hat, and as with some a certificate stating your an honary member of that organization. Some will send you bumber stickers, even T-shirts. As you mentioned you already send money to some charitable organizations. One of more of them SOLD your name and address to others. Do as I did. One day I started calling any 1-800 numbers of any of them and requested where they got my name and address so my attorney could start a class action law suite. All such mail should stop. Also, contact your so called favorite charities and ask if they are selling your information. If they are drop them. These organizations spend more money on such scams than on what they are supposed to be helping people with. And even the people sending out all this junk mail may be making more than you. DO NOT SEND THEM MONEY.

I got that a nickel from the same outfit. The papers went in the trash and the nickel went in my change jar.

Ok, they pay postage, but they get a receive a monster discount. They pay anywhere from 8.5 - 17 cents per parcel.

I recently got a check in the mail for 5 bucks, saying I could cash it and keep the money, but they were wanting an optional donation. They said on the letter that they hope I don't cash it, so I just trashed it and called it even: no give no take!

Not intending to drag this out but let me ask anyone reading this a question. Since we started discussing a Nickel, just what obligation would you consider it necessary if instead of a Nickel, they sent you a Morgan silver dollar? How about a normal, common date Standing Liberty Half Dollar? Just what type of coin would it take for you to send them some money? such a suggestion might be heard and become a reality.
