These things tend to be cyclical. When I first discovered
ebay in around 2002 I had been "on the wagon" so to speak for 7 years with only one purchase to speak of (ah but it was a good one !).
My wife being a frugal immigrant believed in collecting one thing only ! Federal Reserve Notes which she deposited religiously in the bank !
Much to my amazement I found a marketplace that abounded with amazing deals. Beautifull bronze coins of Augustus Tiberius Caligula Claudius Nero etc and selling at auction for prices that left me drooling for more.
After a few years things seemed to slow down and prices approached what I considered reasonable. But over the years it seemed the market would occasionally surge with some great material going for bargain prices. Last year I started buying some excellent VF/EF tetrarchy folles (mostly London issue) for great prices (often $50 sometimes $25 and everything in between) As fate would have it every time I thought myself spent out I miraculously found more cash to spend !
In the end I purchased nearly 100 of the things but how could I not ! Dealers typically want $100-150 each for the things. Hard to pass on those kind of deals.
So I went back on the wagon again once the seller ran out of these coins. Just for giggles I searched through France & Germany yesterday to see what was on the market .........
Nothing Zip Nada
Overpriced low grade ancient coins
It is hard to be patient but what goes up must also go down. By this time next summer hopefully I will be scratching my head trying to figure out where I can find the cash to scoop up some more bargains.
Patience has its rewards
