Hi everyone, I am presently trying to learn more about Sasanian Drachms, and I saw this coin and was rather confused by the particular ways in which the details are formed - the lettering on the obverse seems crude and off, the crown seems oddly formed, and the fire-altar attendants seem very misshapen. Is it possibly a barbarous piece?

Thanks!

I've been studying this type for some time and have to admit sometimes I still have trouble IDing some of them. specially when it comes to the mint. From what I can make out on this coin is Kavad I and an official issue.

echizento- Great. thanks! I must admit that I'm surprised that it's an official issue given how much it seems to deviate from typical coins of Hormazid IV & Khosrou II - which I'm more familliar with.

Any guesses what this coin might be worth for insurance purposes? (realize that the hole takes it down a good bit)

Based on condition and ruler not very much, about $30-$40.

Just for some comparison, here are six Kavad I's from the late Tom Mallon's page, three of which were suspected by Tom to be imitations, the other three which he knew definitively to be imitations.

Some mints turn out better examples than the others.
