can anyone give me some idea of what this might be. it has a lion and shield on one side with printing I cannot make out . the back side is worn but the figure of a woman is visible.

I think it's 10, judging by the 'DI' by the lion's paw. Di as in Diez, meaning ten.

The coin is dated 1870, no matter what denomination.

To be sure, try measuring the diameter. If it is 25 mm (about 1 inch), then it's 5 Centesimos
If it's 30 mm (about 1 1/5 inch) then it's 10 Centesimos.

The coin itself is fairly common in this worn state and is pretty common, you can probably find a similar one for 25 cents at your local coin shop.

It is definitely a 10 centimos: I can read very clear the "CIEN" of "CIEN PIEZAS EN KILOGRAMO" (100 pieces in a kg). If it were the 5 centimos it would have read DOSCIENTAS; for the 2 centimos QUINIENTAS and for the 1 centimo MIL
