Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere; it's a hard thing to search for.

Been roll hunting and when comparing coins side-by-side I notice that those minted in Philadelphia in the last five or six years seem to have a duller finish, a matte finish I think you could call it.

No -- actually I think I mean satin finish.

Well, in any case, does anybody have a notion why that would be?

Thanks for listening.

That is interesting. I am looking forward to what others have to say. I live where the Denver mint supports, so it is always harder to find nice P mint here normally.

I believe most coins are given a "wash" after minting, and the different mints are probably allowed to experiment with that wash. Carbon spots were a huge problem for cents until about 2014, when they suddenly became very uncommon.

The most dramatic difference I think, is the 2000 nickels between P and D-- D almost has the flashy look of a BU Canadian coin compared to the more satiny finish on the P.

Not they don't, but each mint does make its own dies and there are probably differences in how the finish and clea the oxides off the surfaces of the dies after the hardening process. For example a different grit in the surface polishing would provide the results described in the OP.

Does OP live in the area with the Denver mint supplying the coins and the p mints are circulated more?

Denver is higher up and the air is cleaner than at Philadelphia. That means that the metals used for coins gets dirtier faster and the coins that pop out are already duller due to the area where made.
And if you believe me, I'll sell you some really shiny coins made in an even higher area.

Thanks, Carl. I knew you could be trusted to come up with the definitive explanation.
