Hey,

What are some of the classic commemorative coins with the least mintage? Does this make them immediately more valuable?

Mintage #'s are all in the Red Book. Some that come to mind are the three 1939 Oregon trail halves each at a little over 3,000, and the 1928 Hawaii at 10,008 it and the old Spanish Trail have the same mintage but the Hawaii coin sells for considerably more. Then you have the Cincinnati coins three mints produced them with each half the mintage of the Hawaii and Old Spanish Trail but go for less than half than the two. So mintage does play a part but scarcely of the type plays more in valves.

'Least mintage' shouldn't be your only measure. Surviving examples in high grade is always a consideration.

Indeed, buy a Red Book - every collector should have one.

I will eventually need to know this stuff too. Except I was wishing there was an already made list of commems from cheapest to most expensive. I will have to research and make my own.

Suggest you purchase a copy of the current Friday edition of the weekly published Grey Sheet ... which is the dealer price guide for coins ... including classic commemorative.

It's published by the Coin Dealer Network ... CDN ... and this reference will give you the pricing information you are looking for ... and real, current market pricing not Red Book prices which become stale between the annual publishing date.

To the OP ...

I suggest you should not focus on mintage ... there are a number of classic commemorative with lower mintages that are not valued in the market as much as their higher mintage brethren ...

The key is collector demand ... and as such the 50 coin type set is what drives the current prices ...

You should focus you research on the commemorative in the 50 coin type set with the lowest mintages ... and there you will find a satisfying answer relative to current market price.
