How does the obverse have what looks like VG to fine but the reverse probably doesn't even make it to a poor grade?http://www.ebay.com/itm/1850-Braide...AOSwFc5XwQg7

Maybe a pocket piece that someone rubbed their thumb on as a nervous habit?

I've seen one similar that was mounted reverse-side-up in a bezel/leather holder, as a good luck piece, and the reverse was almost slick with a full VF obverse.

No guesses.

Ill watch for an answer for this one. Other than jewelry piece, I can't think of a logical reason.

If it was on the top of a stack of cents during a cross-country trip on rough roads, then one side would be worn much more than the other.

Whatever the cause, the reverse has not sustained natural circulation wear.

I like the jewelry piece theory, but you'd think it would take a hundred years worth of friction to get anywhere close to that.
