The ring light arrived yesterday. Cannot get the unit to attach to my Tamron 90mm 1:2.8 Macro lens. There doesn't seem to be enough surface to secure the 3 set screws. Any suggestions?

The best photo I could get of the bottom of the lens. I am not familiar with stepping rings. There are threads on the inside of the lens. I have no idea what size they are.

I did some checking and found out your tamron has a 55mm filter thread. that suggests to me the ring-light should fit over the lens barrel.

There is a space I have marked in red can the screes engage there you could use some cut card to ensure you don't mark the lens barrel at that point. alternately can you engage the screws on the filter marked in green?

Here an example of a lens hood that might help ( I am not recommending you buy it just wanted to illustrate what I mean. You should be able to find similar in you local camera shop and at a reasonable price.

The ring light will not fit over the area between the green and red arrows to attach at the red arrows. The area with the green arrows does not extend down far enough to allow the screws to tighten and have a snug fit. Would there be another solution? The lens hood you suggest screws to the inside of the lens opening, right? Maybe I need a light with a larger size (opening) to fit at the red arrows?

hamm austrokiwi has a link up on his drawing. there is a hood there that would screw unto your lens. then you screw your light to that hood. that way you wont damage your lens.

hamm I know how I would do it. ray told me some times if you want to test some thing and your careful. masking tape the light on to the lens. just enough to hold it. dont use a lot so not to get your lens sticky. place the tape with care. hamm I would like to see some results with that light. I have used this tape quit a few times to get me by. so I could try some thing. to see if it would work

After following this thread for awhile, I started messing around with the ring light I have. Grabbed a couple of junk coins just to see how they'd come out. Here's the light:

http://www.banggood.com/60-LED-Adju...1048412.html

Set custom white balance using a Canon 1000d and canon 100mm macro lens on <$300 stand. I used step down rings to give me something to attach the light to.

As shown, I did some post processing, but not much. Overall, not bad results with this cheap light. The gold dollar coin was a bit difficult since it has a bit of luster and alot of areas to reflect light off of. I diffused the ring with a layer of Opalux and blocked off some areas. May have to do more depending on the luster of the coin. Rotating the light cast shadowing differently as well as added/reduced hot spots. YMMV depending on how you setup.

you can't go wrong with Adorama... however do you now what the outer Diameter of the lens hood is? As it has to be 62mm or less. As I noted in my first post that is the one failing of this type of ring light.

I thought about buying one of these ring lights til I seen what a PITA it is to attach. Now I am glad I have the one I purchased that comes with a variety of different sized adapters that make it easily attach to most lens and detach in seconds. Good luck adapting it, I am sure it can be done...!
