Hello.

I've been mainly focused on selling online. To grow I want to start to get more involved in shows. Obviously across the country there are thousands each year.

What are your thoughts on the best numismatic shows for dealers looking to buy inventory? What would be the must go to shows with good booth cost vs large enough attendance to make the expense worth it for dealers?

I moved your topic out to the main forum for more attention, since the forum it was in is mainly for advertising upcoming shows and events.

Coin shows are just vague as to how good they are. Also, they change by area. I've seen coin shows come and go due to no attendance and I've seen some so crowded it is difficult to walk in the aisles. By me there are a minimum of 3 shows a Month and used to be 4 a Month. One closed due to little attendance but possibly due to location. You really never know. There is one near me every Month that has always had from 80 to over 100 dealers. There is a 3 day coin show coming up on Sept. 22, 23, 24 as well as one on Sept. 18
How many customers and dealers, no one really ever knows.
To rent a spot at some, it would cost about $50 a day. At some larger shows, like the ones at the Rosemont, Il. Convention Center, a table could cost a few thousand dollars.
Best thing for you to do is make a list of coin shows in your area, go to them and check how they work, their costs, etc.

Thank you for the informative, detailed and frank answer. I guess a big wonder I have also would be are shows like FUN and ANA worth the expense or at some point do small to mid size dealers start to become lost in the noise that these huge shows would seemingly generate? OR is it that size and scale that makes it not really matter as there is so much traffic to go around?

From many, many years of experience with coin shows of all sizes and locations, I strongly believe the larger the show, the less likely you'll end up really happy. The last large show I went to I spent $11 to park, $5 to get in, walked around for hours, ended up getting a shoe shine and went home. Due to the prices dealers have to pay for a table, usually have to rent a room due to multi day shows, food, etc. their coin prices are excessive. So far I've never purchased a coin at a large coin show. I have though purchased many, many coins at smaller coin shows where prices are normal. And at smaller shows usually no admittance fees, no parking fees, just coins and coin stuff. At one fairly decent, not to large show I go to frequently, there is a guy selling coffee and donuts. No price, just whatever you feel like putting in a cup on his table. Makes it almost worth going to that show.

I have a hard time understanding how larger coin shows can be profitable for dealers. When you factor in travel, time, lodging, fees, and other factors there is often a 500+ dollar expense to go to a show. I would think that you would need to be able to sell a lot of material that you wouldn't be able to sell online to justify the costs.

The shows that work best for you also depend on what type of material you sell.

I think one of the less concrete benefit to shows is that it gives dealers an opportunity to buy material and build relationships with and obtain new customers.

As a customer, the vast majority of shows are not worth me going to since I collect primarily foreign coins. I almost never find anything that would contribute to my collection.
