.....it's misleading to the hobby but the RCM in their wisdom just don't care because we keep buying their endless coins.

Very true, the brand of RCM products has become more insignificant over passing time given the mass production. As far as 2ary enhancements, the mintage number is equally laughable and meaningless. But I'm not so sure RCM keeps good record keeping of mintage counts either, accuracy doesn't appear to be one of their main strengths.

My problem with them is the mintage... I'm pretty confident that when the RCM indicates that a coin will be produced to a mintage of 1,500 pieces. That is all they will make. With these coloured coins by others, they say 'only 400' produced, but after they sell out, what's to stop them from reproducing another 1,000 or more and really cash in on their popularity?

Thank You everyone for your educational input. I've been watching the price of this coin go from $119.95 to $149.95 to $179.95 now. Why?

Some collectors believe these are official RCM 400 or so mintage product, six months from now they will be close to bullion value unless one can smoke it.

So, if you can sell defaced coins with Marijuana leaves on it without reprisal ... what is stopping someone from putting nudes on, or a swastika, or a moustache on the Queen?

I personally do not like these third party enhanced coins because they aren't official, but to each there own. I wouldn't pay a premium for these.

I was able to get one of these from The Coin Shoppe for $96 shipped. Jumped on it as soon as I received the email.

I bought it for the novelty and the unique 420 low mintage (don't flame I know it's not a RCM release).
The appeal for this is it as a collectible nothing more, nothing less.
The case is definitely better looking than the boring maroon clamshells from the mint too.

Because not every collector cares about the how and the why, they just like the item.

Someone buying this most likely wouldn't care about a Nobelium Dragon fly and vise versa.

My thought is the same.
But in addition, the buyers who aware, that this is not the mintage, but "production", still believe, that this will be rare scarce hard to find item (and forgetting that will be zero interest to it).

Might this come from the same German Mint as who "defaces" Silver Maple Leafs? The reason is questionable, why RCM would be compelled not to publish the name of the German Mint that produced a product that RCM is selling.

I don't think its the same German mint but it "could be" who knows...

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised to see the RCM selling these burning maple type coins at some point in the future, they sell other mints coins all the time, its not that much of a stretch to dabble in the "enhanced" coins as well.

I am sure they can put just the right amount of spin on it to make it "legal" so they can sell them. If in fact it is actually "illegal" now to sell them , which it seems it isn't.

It's the owners of copyrights and patents to ask government agencies to enforce the law. I don't think the Queen would be to pleased to have her image opposite a flaming marijuana leaf.

It wouldn't surprise me either. While I've never personally viewed any and have no intention of collecting them, the application of Ruthenium finish appears to involve a technology that RCM has not yet conquered.

And just a thought but if the dictionary definition of "defacing" has recently changed to encompass colour enhancing, then Artificial Toning of coins is equally illegal.
