This one? Just to say I'm somewhat flabbergasted by the way in which our maple leaf can be so easily transformed into a marijuana leaf. Who's to say, perhaps a junior potato is equally possible.

Some would see that kind of plating/color treatment as damage to an otherwise desirable coin. It does look kinda cool, but not something I'd want in my collection.

If I not mistake, the price has been raised.

But again - initial hype, and then - not really interested people.

What happened with "Burning Maple"?
Several of them issued, and not sure, that people remember, which was "the first"...anyway, majority of auctions ended below CAD 100.

There are plenty of cannabis-themed pure silver rounds out there (without the color/plating), such as https://sdbullion.com/2016-1-oz-sil...silver-round

I'd rather have one of those (and I almost bought a few last month before my budget ran out).

Love that band, particularly "Willin", 1971 Track 5.
"I've been from Tucson to Tucumcari
Tehachapi to Tonapah
Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made
Driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed
And if you give me, weed, whites, and wine
And you show me a sign
I'll be willin', to be movin'"

There is a theme. Good chuckle.

If their illegal than why are reputable dealers openly selling them?

Simple the RCM just don't care about their copyrights and the counterfeit issue, they leave it to the end users, us.

What john says plus there is a gray area on what defacing actually means, grinding off the face would be a quite blatant "defacing" but putting on some color without actually damaging the coins, eh whos knows I guess lol.

Good Times...

In upholding this law, the prosecution would be in the difficult position of arguing that the "defacing" of the Maple Leaf coin lessened it's face value below $5. Then the defence would point out that the "enhancing" was not defacement whatsoever because it increased the appeal beyond the $5 value more than 100 fold.

The BofC has always redeemed "mutilated" or defaced banknotes at par, but aside from more recent ARP, not typically coin. Therefore I think this law was designed to prevent a faction from, for example, drawing devil's horns on the effigy of kings or queens in order to make an anti-govt statement whereby the general public would become uncomfortable in accepting "defaced" circualtion coin in their change.

All laws were created with a specific intent. Flash forward to the 21st century in Canada with a PM who promoted the legalization of marijuana as an election promise, meanwhile RCM is likely the direct supplier to this German company. For the court to attempt to prosecute a foreign company for defacing a $5 silver coin while RCM churns out hundreds of NCLT designs each year would be an utterly entertaining court case. If so, is RCM in violation of Cdn Criminal Code as well?

Bullion loophole? Because they are not intended for circulation? No intent to defraud?

There's no grey area, these unofficial colourings obviously has no RCM authorizations so it's defacing, copyrights infringements, but it's not for us to battle, there are still collectors who believe these mintages of 400 or so, are official RCM products, it's misleading to the hobby but the RCM in their wisdom just don't care because we keep buying their endless coins.
