I am of two minds here. First, as a buyer I demand exceptional customer service, and while I don't feel the customer is always right, reasonable accomodations should be made. That said, I am also a seller on
ebay of coins. I learned the hard way early on that due to all the free shipping nowadays via
Amazon and the like, buyers have become obsessed with shipping costs. If your goal via
ebay is to setup an extensive, high volume, profitable business then you should just do free shipping so issues like this don't develop, and of course bundle coins. If like me you are just selling coins that you no longer desire and hope someone will enjoy them more, then shipping costs must be more carefully monitored, and free shipping could end in being a burden. Is the seller to lose money selling you a coin? I have coins I would rather give away then sell due to shipping cost exceeding value.
Specifically, to your situation. First, eBay/Paypal has rules and it is advised that the item be sent to the address listed, because problems can ensue otherwise. Seller protection is for the address on file. Did he advise you prior to the sale, via his auction what his shipping costs were? They seem high. I list all conditions ahead of time. I know many auction houses do list that they will bundle coins, if they don't they are not obligated to do so. I once sold a coin for $1 and sent it via a stamp and the buyer was upset because it was not protected or bundled the way CNG bundles my $5,000 coins. I think that is asinine. I don't expect a Corolla do drive like my Tesla. I should have chucked that mediocre coin in the trash for all the trouble it was worth.
ebay is not
Amazon, Target, etc. You cannot expect or demand the service, shipping, or return service of billion dollar corporations. In closing, if he set his terms up front, including shipping costs you should complete the sale, and have the coins sent to your address on file. If he did not disclose the terms and you are unhappy, then cancel the sale. Naturally you are free to not buy from him again. I confess I am biased here, because I sell on
ebay, with no intent to profit; and yet it seems like more trouble then it is worth. I sleep easy knowing my livelyhood does not depend on the fickle often prickly nature of
ebay buyers.
