I feel it is a die crack. The reason you are seeing gray is because the plating has been knocked off the top of the die crack because it is higher. It was on the coin when struck, but circulation make it flake off.

Yes, I agree with Coop. The new images show that the Gray area is NOT incuse. If you email me permission to use your images and the name you would like for image credit I'll list it on Cuds-on-Coins.
