This is even more confirmation for me as to why I have never, nor ever will buy coins on e-bay, although I am sure there are honest sellers on e-bay, I just don't want to take the chance. I have found several online dealers that have treated me fairly and I will continue to support them. I also feel safe here on the coin community as I know that I am dealing with "collectors" not salesman.

Cuprous,

I do a lot of buying on ebay and am satisfied about 90% of the time. I'm working to get to 100%. After 9 years on ebay I have learned the "tricks of the trade". I have a short list of favorite sellers (even they make some mistakes). These days I focus on Morgan and Peace VAMs and on any given day I have 20,000 coins to look through. I don't actually make it through that many, but if I wanted to and my cable modem cooperates, I could.

My point to you and others here is you can shop with confidence there if you've done your homework and understand how unscrupulous sellers operate. I've only had to return two out of nearly 250 coins acquired on ebay. Both returns went well and I was just out my return postage. What I haven't done is pay too much for a condition/rarity-inflated coin. I usually get the pieces I bid on below greysheet for the condition. How is that done you ask ... if you can't make an accurate assesment of grade based on the photos provided ... pass on the coin. Other opportunities will come along.

I think to dismiss ebay and other auction venues is a mistake. Just learn how to work within the limitations of the venue.

Seatednut,

Point well taken, I just don't have the time presently to do the homework or spend 9 years learning the tricks of the trade. I am aware of many missed opportunities on great buys through E-bay and have kicked myself in the butt several times. I am sure that down the road when I can spend the time educating myself on E-bay I will definitely take advantage of it's resources. I did not intend to bash E-bay as I understand that just like anywhere you will find good and bad.
Thank you for the much appreciated input.

Cuprous,

It won't take you 9 years (I'm a real slow learner )

My learning curve accelerated exponentially when I joined this forum in May of last year. This site has the most useful, honest information than any other site on the https://www.

I have never doctored a coin photo and resent that anyone would insinuate it.

Eaglefoot, that is not a rip on the half-dollar.

From the US Coin History ( Peace dollars) link on the left:

The design came very close to reappearing once more in 1964, when Congress authorized production of 45 million... Although all pieces were to be recalled and melted, rumors persist of several coins surviving.

It was part of an elaborate April fool's joke a few years back that got quite a few members here.

Susan picked it up at an estate sale of a recently deceased retired congressman you know.

You can be well assured that if I had one of these, I would never let anyone knew I had it, let alone get rid of it!
