Hi,

Going through some coins I came across a few from Hong Kong. I have a hard time with new coins let alone a old one.

Opinions-Of-This-Hong-Kong-1-Mil-Coin?

Opinions-Of-This-Hong-Kong-1-Mil-Coin?

And would it do any good to try to clean off some of the crud?
Thanks,
Glen

While I'm unfamiliar with that coin, that dirt sure looks like a true sign of age.
I would be really cautious about cleaning this one, but despite the dirt the patina looks consistent.
Clean a coin that old and it might get blotchy--and obviously cleaned...your call.

Very interesting shaped coin....if it's valuable, you could maybe sell it as 'uncleaned' and let the buyer decide :)

1 mil, km#1, VR of course for Queen Victoria, value about $2-3 in VG, $100 or so uncirculated. I would call this VF details/net VG because of the corrosion; it may have too much surface metal eaten away for any conservation methods to restore it. For me, the coin would be added to my collection as is, stored in a way to minimize and slow future corrosion. Final grade: ILIAL (I like it a lot).

That coin has character! Cleaning it would be a crime.

I love that grade....ILIAL! You may have solved the dilemma I have with grading coins.....Keep the one's you like.

And I believe I'm finally coming to the understanding....don't clean them, if you like them, keep them as they are.

Thanks,
Glen
