Is there an easy way to tell between the two and are they the same indicators for newer vs. older dates. Thanks.

For specimen, the rim and lettering would be more square, the strike being stronger. You would see the denticles very well defined and consistent around the whole rim. And stuff like the cheekbone of the King would really pop out. The canoe on the reverse would have full detail (in other strikes, the middle of the canoe is usually weak).

I don't think this is a specimen. A very nice strike though

specimen is a better strike than PL. I'm not 100% familiar with older PL (the George VI ones). So I'll let someone else chime in. But my opinion is this:

Comparing to other PL that were certified (see the link below), your coin doesn't look very PL unfortunately. Looking at the middle of the canoe (the bag on the back, going up to the tree), the strike looks a tad weaker than what we see in the PL example. Also, the rim on the reverse of your (around 8 to 9 o'clock) has weaker denticles.

Just my opinion, but hopefully someone else can provide better knowledge.
