When you don't have much luck finding silver at the bank, apparently you should just wait and let it fall into your lap!
I was out attending a yard sale, and proceeded to the "checkout" once I was ready to pay. To my surprise, the cash box that the proprietor was using was full of those two hardly-used denominations: small-size dollar coins and half dollars!
The dollars--and there were dozens of them--were all dumped into a large central tray, while the half dollars were placed in a much smaller one off to the side. Just as we all would, I could not help glancing at the piles of coins to see if there was anything interesting there.
As was to be expected, the collective pile of dollars did not seem to be anything out of the ordinary. So, I looked in the direction of the half dollars. I'll admit my heart started racing when the very first thing I noticed was a 1964 half dollar, sitting face up on top of the stack!
I conducted the subsequent exchange as calmly and diplomatically as possible, especially considering my inherent excitement at finding a large-size 90% silver coin "in the wild."
As luck would have it, the proprietor was a big fan of $2 bills, and I just so happened to have a wallet full of them. So, I exchanged multiple $2 bills for groups of half dollars, until I had both received the 1964 coin back, and was able to see that there was nothing else of interest hiding further down in the pile.
90% silver half dollars are quite rare in my area--I only find 1 or 2 a year on average--so I was quite happy to receive it. A yard sale was also just about the last place I would have expected to pick one up for face value!
After I left, I couldn't help but think how incredibly lucky I was that the 1964 coin was sitting on the top of the stack, and not on the bottom. If it was mixed into the pile at all, I likely would have missed it!
