The story behind this coin is: When my grandfather was a child he found this coin wedged between two beams in the family barn. I took it to my local coin store but the owner had no idea what it is. He said that it was french but that was all. I would really like to know.

Hello and to the Forum!

The coin looks to me like a French 1- or 2-Sol piece of King Louis XVI, minted in the early 1790s after the Revolution but before the abolition of the Monarchy. For easier identification, please could you post clear photos of both sides of the coin, and give the approximate diameter and weight? Thanks!

On the obverse there will be a mintmark. These are sought after in good condition.
It could also be a 12 denier. These are thick chunky coins and pleasing to the eye.
As Rob says clear pictures and details are reqd...however,regardless the condition of your coin relegates it to the less than £10 status.

It's worn, but looks like a 1792 Limoges (an I mintmark below the bust, to the right of what looks like the worn 2 of the date). copper coin. Here's a similar one, in the 6 denier denomination. The denomination of yours is on the reverse side, to the left of the column - should be a 3,6 or 12. Because it's from Limoges it's relatively rare, though the wear limits its value to $20 or so.

Interesting story about where it came from. My grandpa gave me some coins he'd picked out of circulation at his job as treasurer. The best one was an old Canadian Half Dime.
