Does the Tiger Striping Toning, help this coin or hurt this coin? Also I noticed you can barely make out the VDB, but there isn't any wear on the high spots on the reverse.

This type of toning is called wood grain toning and it is the result of an improper mix of metals. There's a whole thread about it here...

Your coin has very nice wood grain toning and in this case, I think that it would help the coin. As for a grade, I'd give this one a solid MS-63 BN.

Great looking coin!

You only need 5% red to qualify as RB according to PCGS standards so I'd say MS-64 RB. Wood grain tone will add a bit of desirability.

Great coin, I am jealous. I agree with red/brown and very nice wood grain look.

I've always thought of this "wood grain toning" to be very unattractive. I always thought it was the result of very abrasive cleaning. I guess I can up the price on some things I'm going to sell!

As per PCGS, < 5% Red = Brown, 5-95% Red = Red/Brown, >95% Red = Red.

That's why there are such huge price differences on R/B prices.
Rest in Peace

I disagree with this coin being R/B also, but I guess we'll have to go with statistics . It's a very nice Woodie but has obverse rim issues and a hit above his eye . does not look to be any wear . reverse is impeccable accept for hit on letter O in ONE . MS-63RB .

I am glad that others like the toning, because it really caught my eye and I really like the pattern. I feel like it makes the coin have a positive unique eye appeal. I find this in a coin roll, and I also found another 1909 VDB that looks nicer than this one. I am going to post a new subject for the second one and I hope to generate some feedback on that one as well. Thanks everyone.
