John1 Moderator United States 56855 Posts	Posted 11/23/2016 04:23 am The switch from copper to copper plated zinc happened in 1982. Some 1982 cents are copper and some are copper plated zinc. Pre 1982 cents are not pure copper,95%copper 5% zinc/tin. The weight of the OP's coin is within mint tolerance. Zincolns weight 2.5G and non Zincolns 3.1G +/- .14G. The tin content was slowly phased out between post-WWII and 1962 so the composition from 1962-1982 was actually 95% copper and 5% zinc. Due to the high copper content of both alloys, there is little to no visual difference between them. The newer brass-plated Zincoln errors have a plating that is rich in zinc(due to leftover zinc planchets dissolving in the electroplating bath) so they tend to be a more traditional yellow brassy color.
