Hi -
I need to purchase any kind of inexpensive European 1600 AD replicas as props for a film. Anyone know a place I can do that?
Thanks.

Does it matter where from, particularly?

Bulk repro Spanish "pieces of eight" are relatively easy to be found, especially in the US, such as this seller, but if you're after reproductions of specific coins from a specific country, you might need to search further afield, or even have them made to order. There are a couple of overseas companies that produce European repros: Westair Reproductions is a name that turns up at museums and historic sites all over the UK. This one does mainly ancients and English/British, while this Czech site has a few European types.

I found these by a Google search for reproduction coins (exact phrase); you'll find thousands of other places who make them.

Any of those bulk sellers would probably do for some generic "old coins". But if you're wanting to include a closeup shot of some coins in the film, it might be best to borrow some real coins or purchase a couple of higher-quality reproductions. For a coin collector, there's nothing more jarring than spotting an anachronistic coin in a movie.

Good links Sap, I was asking gold or silver to ultimately suggest that for medium/wide shots you could use any old slugs, but for close shots you could find inexpensive examples of real silver coins from the era. I've purchased real ones recently for from $5-20 each. Might be worth it if historical accuracy is important, as you suggest. Depends on the budget.

Thanks, gang. All great suggestions. FYI - I'm looking at silver coins from Italy but I probably won't be doing any close ups so Spain may do. ;o) Thanks again!
